It’s a coach’s intent to recruit the best players who fit their programs. Fit is a crucial aspect of the process. Athletic recruiting is a two-sided responsibility of the athlete and coaching staff. It involves investigation, observation, number crunching, and having a good feeling about the athlete. The coach’s role when recruiting is to help guide the student-athlete in making a good college choice—not convince him to attend their school. A coach does that by showing interest, developing a relationship, providing time with team members, and by giving honest and forthright information about the program and the institution to potential athletes. No matter how the student’s athletic career ends up, a coach wants that student to have made a good college choice.
The pool of potential recruits is created in various ways. Potential names will be generated by game observation, recommendations from coaches, parents making an initial contact, or from a myriad of recruiting organizations. A program’s success is due, in part, to the competition amongst our athletes—good players making good players better.
